Do Houseplants Actually Reduce Indoor CO2? The Honest Math

The Short Answer

Houseplants do absorb CO2 — but at rates so small that they make no measurable difference to indoor CO2 levels in a normal home. One adult exhales more CO2 in an hour than a large houseplant absorbs in days. Opening a window for five minutes outperforms a jungle of ficus trees.

That doesn't mean plants are pointless. It means you should get them for the right reasons.

The Math That Settles It

A person at rest exhales roughly 35-40 grams of CO2 per hour — about 1 kg per day. A healthy, well-lit houseplant fixes on the order of 0.1-0.5 grams of CO2 per hour, and only while it is photosynthesising.

To offset one sedentary adult in real time you would need somewhere between 100 and 400 sizeable plants, each with strong light. In a dim apartment corner, photosynthesis drops to near zero and the ratio gets dramatically worse.

Plants Release CO2 at Night

Photosynthesis needs light. In darkness, plants respire like the rest of us — consuming oxygen and releasing CO2. The amounts are tiny (a fraction of a gram per hour), so the popular worry about "plants suffocating you while you sleep" is as overblown as the purification claims. But it does mean bedroom plants are a slight net negative for overnight CO2, which is when levels matter most for sleep.

What About the Famous NASA Study?

The 1989 NASA Clean Air Study — the source of virtually every "air-purifying plants" listicle — tested VOC removal in small sealed chambers, not homes, and did not study CO2 at all. A 2019 review in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology concluded that matching even the chamber results in a real building would require 10-1,000 plants per square metre. Ordinary ventilation replaces indoor air far faster than plants can clean it.

What Actually Lowers Indoor CO2

  1. Ventilation — windows, trickle vents, or an ERV. See ERVs vs opening windows.
  2. Reducing density — fewer people per room, or shorter closed-door sessions.

So Should You Skip the Plants?

Keep the plants! They measurably reduce stress, they modestly raise humidity (useful in dry winters — see temperature, humidity and IAQ), and some studies suggest small VOC reductions. They are wonderful for wellbeing.

Just don't ask them to do a window's job. For CO2, the hierarchy is simple: ventilation first, monitoring always, plants for joy.
